  1. * Installation of Hostage Rescue *
  2.  
  3. Extract all the (non-text) files from hostage.zip
  4. into your Doom2 directory. Then exit to DOS and go to
  5. your Doom2 directory, and type INSTALL. The installation
  6. program will take you through the rest of it, including how
  7. to restore your system once you finish playing. Please note
  8. that you install this wad at your own risk. Basically
  9. we will not accept any liability for this wad. If you
  10. are in doubt about any of the install procedures,
  11. then DO NOTHING! Better safe than sorry.
  12.  
  13. The install file will create 4 new files in your
  14. Doom2 directory. These files consist of 2 log
  15. files and 2 bat files. The two log files will only 
  16. contain useful information if deusf or dehacked stuff 
  17. up during installation. The other two files (play.bat 
  18. and restore.bat) allow you to easily run and restore 
  19. Hostage Rescue Wad. 
  20. Remember to type RESTORE at the DOS
  21. prompt after you have finished playing Hostage
  22. Rescue Wad. Doing this returns everything to
  23. normal, and will help maximise your HD space.
  24. If you wish to permanently delete
  25. Hostage Rescue (perish the thought)
  26. you should firstly ensure that you have
  27. made a clean exit from Doom2, and typed
  28. RESTORE. Then, just delete all the 'foreign'
  29. files from your HD.

  31. If you want to use command lines (e.g -devparm
  32. or -warp, for example) then you should edit
  33. play.bat, which is a file that is automatically
  34. created during install. Just add command lines
  35. as per normal.

  37. If you are using v1.666 of Doom2, you may have
  38. some problems. This package includes a
  39. Dehacked patch to create many effects, and is
  40. a pretty vital part of the whole game.
  41. However, a pirate version of Doom2 (v.1666)
  42. exists, and it is not compatible with Dehacked.
  43. The pirate version is recognisable by the size of
  44. its Doom2.exe, which is 687001 bytes. If you
  45. use the dehacked patch (hostage6.deh)
  46. the almost inevitable result will be that your
  47. screen fills with fuzz and your computer locks
  48. up. The only solution is to upgrade to a higher
  49. version of Doom2. Registered upgrade patches
  50. can be found on ftp.cdrom.com.

  52. Finally, for network or serial games, you will need
  53. to install Hostage Rescue as normal. Then, rename
  54. your Doom2.exe to something like Doomorg.exe. The
  55. next step is to rename the Dehacked.exe as Doom2.exe.
  56. If you don't do this, then for your multiplayer game,
  57. the Dehacked patch won't take effect. Also, remember
  58. to reverse this process once you are finished, by
  59. reverting Doom2.exe back to Dehacked.exe, and
  60. Doomorg.exe back to Doom2.exe.
