* Installation of Hostage Rescue *
Extract all the (non-text) files from hostage.zip
into your Doom2 directory. Then exit to DOS and go to
your Doom2 directory, and type INSTALL. The installation
program will take you through the rest of it, including how
to restore your system once you finish playing. Please note
that you install this wad at your own risk. Basically
we will not accept any liability for this wad. If you
are in doubt about any of the install procedures,
then DO NOTHING! Better safe than sorry.
The install file will create 4 new files in your
Doom2 directory. These files consist of 2 log
files and 2 bat files. The two log files will only
contain useful information if deusf or dehacked stuff
up during installation. The other two files (play.bat
and restore.bat) allow you to easily run and restore
Hostage Rescue Wad.
Remember to type RESTORE at the DOS
prompt after you have finished playing Hostage
Rescue Wad. Doing this returns everything to
normal, and will help maximise your HD space.
If you wish to permanently delete
Hostage Rescue (perish the thought)
you should firstly ensure that you have
made a clean exit from Doom2, and typed
RESTORE. Then, just delete all the 'foreign'
files from your HD.
If you want to use command lines (e.g -devparm
or -warp, for example) then you should edit
play.bat, which is a file that is automatically
created during install. Just add command lines
as per normal.
If you are using v1.666 of Doom2, you may have
some problems. This package includes a
Dehacked patch to create many effects, and is
a pretty vital part of the whole game.
However, a pirate version of Doom2 (v.1666)
exists, and it is not compatible with Dehacked.
The pirate version is recognisable by the size of
its Doom2.exe, which is 687001 bytes. If you
use the dehacked patch (hostage6.deh)
the almost inevitable result will be that your
screen fills with fuzz and your computer locks
up. The only solution is to upgrade to a higher
version of Doom2. Registered upgrade patches
can be found on ftp.cdrom.com.
Finally, for network or serial games, you will need
to install Hostage Rescue as normal. Then, rename
your Doom2.exe to something like Doomorg.exe. The
next step is to rename the Dehacked.exe as Doom2.exe.
If you don't do this, then for your multiplayer game,
the Dehacked patch won't take effect. Also, remember
to reverse this process once you are finished, by
reverting Doom2.exe back to Dehacked.exe, and
Doomorg.exe back to Doom2.exe.
